Who we are

Cognitiveaxiscorp builds the screening layer most New Zealand hiring teams never had

Cognitiveaxiscorp builds AI screening and psychometric tools for New Zealand employers who want evidence behind every hiring call they make. We came out of recruitment and organisational psychology work, not a software incubator, and that shows in how the product is put together.

Where it started

A recruitment desk, too many CVs, and one stubborn question

We spent the better part of a decade filling technical and operational roles across Auckland, Hamilton and Christchurch. The pattern was always the same. A client would send a job description, we would get three hundred applications in a week, and everyone involved would quietly agree that the shortlist came down to who wrote the tidiest cover letter.

That bothered us. It bothered us because we watched capable people get passed over for reasons that had nothing to do with the job, and we watched confident interviewers hire people who fell apart six months in. So we started writing down what actually predicted performance in the roles we were filling, then testing it against hires that worked out and hires that did not.

The notes turned into a scoring method. The method turned into software. By 2019 we had a working prototype running alongside our own desk, and it was beating us at shortlisting. Not occasionally. Every time. So we stopped running a recruitment agency and started building the tool we had been wishing someone else would build.

What we believe

Hiring decisions should survive being questioned

Every hiring call we help you make should hold up if someone asks how you got there. That single idea drives how we build, what we refuse to automate and how we price the work.

Evidence over instinct

Interviewers are confident people and confidence is not accuracy. We give panels something concrete to check their gut against instead of asking them to trust it harder.

A person always signs off

Our system ranks and explains. It never makes the final call. Every shortlist we produce has a named reviewer who read it before it reached you.

Data stays in New Zealand

Candidate information is hosted and processed here, retained for a fixed period, and deleted on request without argument. Our privacy policy spells out the detail.

We tell you when it is wrong

If a client asks us to screen for a trait that does not predict anything, we say so. If the law or the ethics are shaky, we say that too. It has cost us work and we are fine with that.

Plain language, always

No candidate should need a psychology degree to understand why they were or were not shortlisted. Neither should your hiring manager.

Better process, not just faster

Speed is a side effect. What we are actually after is a process that gets more of the right people into rooms where they can do good work.

Our philosophy

Screening is a filter, not a verdict

People are complicated. Any tool that claims to read a person from a forty-minute test is selling you something. What a good screening process does is remove the noise around a decision so a human can make it with better inputs.

So we build for the human. We rank, we explain, we flag, and then we hand it over. The hiring manager still decides. The candidate still gets a fair shot. Everything in between just gets clearer.

2009

Started on a recruitment desk in Auckland, filling engineering and operations roles the old way.

2014

Began writing competency models for clients, mostly because the generic ones were useless.

2019

First prototype in production, screening our own desk's applicants before any client saw it.

2021

Added psychometric assessment under the guidance of our first consulting psychologist.

2023

Moved fully into software, closed the recruitment side, opened the Fanshawe Street office.

2025

Screening our eleven-thousandth New Zealand applicant and still arguing about item wording.

The people

Small team, deep benches in hiring and psychology

We are deliberately compact. The people who design your screen are the people who answer your email six months later when a hire is not working out.

Work we are proud of

Projects that changed how a client hires

We do not publish client names without permission, but the shape of the work is the same each time. A mess of applications goes in, a defensible shortlist comes out, and the hiring manager stops dreading Monday.

Screening rollout for a national trades employer
Retail and trades

2,400 applicants, one national rollout

A home improvement chain was hiring seasonal staff across eleven stores at once. We built one scoring rubric per store type and ran every applicant through it. Time to first interview dropped from nineteen days to six.

Psychometric benchmarking for a public sector client
Public sector

Benchmarking a whole department

A regional council wanted to know what a good analyst looked like inside their own organisation before hiring more. We assessed existing staff, built an internal benchmark, and screened four intakes against it.

Leadership assessment programme for a technology firm
Technology

Leadership hires without the guesswork

A Wellington software firm had three senior hires in a row walk out inside a year. We rebuilt their interview process around structured psychometric results and the next two stayed past their first anniversary.

Success, measured honestly

We count the hires that lasted, not the ones we filled

Anyone can tell you how many roles they filled. The number that matters is how many of those people were still there a year later, and how many of them were genuinely good at the job.

Across the roles we have screened since 2022, first-year attrition for clients running our full process sits at 11 per cent. The average for the same job families filling without screening is 19 per cent. The gap is the whole point.

What we do

Two services, and the reason each one exists

AI pre-hire screening report

AI Pre-Hire Screening

The service we built first, because volume hiring was the problem that nearly broke us. It scores applications against your competency model, ranks candidates, and writes out the reasoning behind every position on the list.

Psychometric fit assessment profile

Psychometric Fit Assessment

The service we added when clients kept telling us the shortlist was good but the interviews were still a coin toss. Full assessment, benchmarked to your team, with a debrief that tells you what to probe in the interview.

Come say hello

We work out of Fanshawe Street and we are happy to meet you

If you want to see the screening output before you buy anything, book a thirty-minute session and bring a real applicant pool with you. We will run it live and you can judge the results yourself.
