Are psychometric tests worth the money?

Are psychometric tests worth the money?
Every few years someone asks me whether psychometric testing is worth the cost, and every few years the answer is the same: it depends entirely on the role. For a warehouse picker on a six-week contract, spending eighty dollars on a personality profile is money down the drain. For a team leader who will manage twelve people and stay for four years, that same spend is cheap insurance. The question is never whether the tests work. It is whether the role is expensive enough to get wrong. What the tests are genuinely good at is predicting the things an interview cannot show you. Anyone can be charming for forty-five minutes. Not everyone can stay calm when a project falls over two days before launch. A well-built assessment gives you a reading on conscientiousness, emotional stability and how someone handles pressure, and those traits tend to hold steady over time. Interviews measure performance. Assessments measure tendencies. You want both. The trap is treating a score as a verdict. I have seen managers reject a strong candidate because they scored mid-range on one trait, and that is a misuse of the tool. A psychometric report should give you a starting point and three better questions to ask, not a rubber stamp. If you are using it to filter people out at the first hurdle, you are probably throwing away good hires and calling it rigour. My rule of thumb is simple. Test for roles where a bad hire costs you six months or more, use the results to shape the interview rather than replace it, and always tell candidates what you are doing and why. Do that and the money is well spent. Use it as a shortcut to avoid thinking, and no test on earth will save you.
